Hello

Hello and welcome to our blog. We are a family of 4 and have been home educating since our eldest son would have started school in 2012. Dh and I share the H.E duties between us. We're going to try blogging partly to encourage us to reflect on what we're doing and partly to share what we're up to with anybody who may be interested. As a family we are all really enjoying home ed. so if we help in any way to support others or to help spread the word then that would be wonderful.

Breeding fruit flies

An easy summer science project. Well, actually this is the third time we've done it and the first time it's worked, but it was easy once the conditions were right! We were doing life cycles, very clearly seen in fruit flies as their life cycle is around two weeks.

First some lovely rotten fruit in a jar. "Lovely," think the fruit flies. "We'll lay our eggs here." Within a few days:

Larvae! Then pupae:

And finally:

The adults have been on the fruit long enough to breed again and lay eggs so we'll release them and see if we get a second generation!
