Hello

Hello and welcome to our blog. We are a family of 4 and have been home educating since our eldest son would have started school in 2012. Dh and I share the H.E duties between us. We're going to try blogging partly to encourage us to reflect on what we're doing and partly to share what we're up to with anybody who may be interested. As a family we are all really enjoying home ed. so if we help in any way to support others or to help spread the word then that would be wonderful.

Co-operative learning

As with most things in life I am discovering a happy middle way in our approach to education. As one of my favourite forum sites puts it 'A Little Bit of Structure' and a lot of freedom. 2 hours of school pretty intensely done gives another 10 waking hours to do this...

Also, the structured planned work we do often fuel their imaginative games. Ds4 refused to wear socks for a while after we learnt about Sparta to prove how tough he is. We have a lot of Romans roamin' around our garden at the moment as that's where we are in history at the moment.

Our rabbit trails often begin in the structured stuff too. Ds6 was playing 'Nobody Knows the Trouble I've Seen' in recorder so we watched Louis Armstrong singing it and then more videos of him and ended up with a jam session.

Sometimes it works the other way. We were at the Botanics in Edinburgh at the weekend and stumbled on the Met Office weather station there so will be making our own soon as school stuff.

Bit of this and a bit of that.
